As far as cost goes I would choose linux. I think both are on par as far as stability goes. I have a web/ftp/ssh server that is running Windows 2003 Server and it has never crashed. But it is expensive. It all depends on what you want to use it for.
MY vote is for * Windows XP for Desktop OS * Linux for Server * Mac OS for Multimedia * Solaris for Large organisation
