MY vote is for
* Windows XP for Desktop OS
* Linux for Server
* Mac OS for Multimedia
* Solaris for Large organisation

As far as cost goes I would choose linux. I think both are on par as far as stability goes. I have a web/ftp/ssh server that is running Windows 2003 Server and it has never crashed. But it is expensive. It all depends on what you want to use it for.
